Lesson Transcript

Hej, jeg hedder [name]. Hi everybody! I’m [name].
Welcome to DanishClass101.com’s “Dansk på tre minutter”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Danish.
In the last lesson, you learned how to talk about your plans. In this lesson, we are going to deal with the verb “to be” in Danish, at være.
We will also discuss how to talk about your nationality.
When you meet a new person in Denmark, they might ask you Hvor er du fra? which is the equivalent of "Where are you from?"
Hvor means “where,” and you’re familiar with du, the word for "you."
er is a conjugated form of the verb “to be”, at være.
fra means "from?"
All together it's Hvor er du fra?
[slowly] Hvor er du fra?
Answering this question is very easy! You just say Jeg er, which means "I am", then your nationality.
For example- Jeg er amerikaner
[slowly] Jeg er amerikaner.
This means “I am American.”
You can just replace amerikaner with your own nationality.
"I am German" is Jeg er tysker.
"I am Italian" is Jeg er italiener.
"I am Brazilian" is Jeg er brasilianer.
You can also add the fra after jeg er to give the sentence a bit more substance. In that case you would also have to change the nationality to the name of the country, like we do in English; “I am from [country]”
For example, if you are from France you say,
Jeg er fra Frankrig.
[slowly] Jeg er fra Frankrig.
Or if you are from Australia you say-
Jeg er fra Australien.
[slowly] Jeg er fra Australien.
To return the question you can simply say Hvad med dig? which is "What about you?”
Now it’s time for [name]’s Insights.
Be careful because in Danish, we don’t write nationality names with a capital letter like in English!
It’s the same with languages or other people as well. But we do write country names with a capital letter, so don’t confuse them.
In this lesson you learned how to talk about nationalities.
Next time we’ll continue to study the verb at være and see how to use it to talk about locations. By the way, do you know how to ask someone where they are in Danish? I'll be waiting for you with the answer in the next Dansk på 3 minutter.
På gensyn!

Hi Haydøn.

Thanks for your positive feedback. We're happy to hear that you're enjoying the lessons.

You're Danish sentence is correct except for one little thing. "Til" is always spelled with just one "l" in Danish.

Keep it up!

Marc
